Episode 2. Maggie the Magpie. (Trees are life!)

Synopsis:

The main message from this episode is that ‘Trees are Life’. Trees are the natural Co2 capture devices that technology has yet to mimic effectively. They absorb Co2 and release oxygen and provide homes for many living species.  I have localised this story based on true events. A local section of forest at Cabarita Beach in Northern NSW was cleared for housing and therefore displacing many local flora and fauna and also diverted the natural water flow and therefore caused major flooding during the recent rains. Another sensitive area close by was being cleared for development, but community action saved it form destruction. The land was purchased by the government and is now a koala sanctuary as well as a nature reserve for all the native birds. Using the below information, I have created a narrative about maggie losing her home and how community spirit saved the next forest from development.

Sustainability Framework Guide:  Managing change

• Identify reasons why predictions of the future can be wrong.

• Demonstrate flexibility by adjusting designs and actions as a result of feedback.

Australian Curriculum: Mathematics, students can develop the proficiencies of problem-solving and reasoning essential for the exploration of sustainability issues and their solutions. Students apply spatial reasoning, measurement, estimation, calculation and comparison to gauge local ecosystem health and can cost proposed actions for sustainability. Mathematical understandings and skills are necessary to measure, monitor and quantify change in social, economic and ecological systems over time and statistical analysis enables the prediction of probable futures based on findings and helps inform decision-making and actions that will lead to preferred futures.
